Abstract

1312303 Feeding and delivering sheets XEROX CORP 30 June 1970 [3 July 1969] 31615/70 Heading B8R Copy sheets are fed to the transfer station D, Fig. 2, of a xerographic copying machine from supply trays 52 or 53 and delivered to a catch tray 51 (Fig. 1, not shown) for printing on one side, or are fed from the tray 53 and delivered to the tray 52 to form a stack from which they are fed again to the machine and delivered to the tray 51 for printing on both sides. The trays 52, 53 are of similar construction. The tray 52 comprises a support platform 56, Figs. 2 and 5, a stationary side margin guide 59, a movable side margin guide 58, and L-shaped rear retaining members 60, Figs. 5 and 10, adjustably secured to the side guides. Side margin joggers 246 are associated with the side guides, and front joggers 245 are also provided. There is also provided a pair of retaining members 70 overlying the front margin of the stack 57, Figs. 5, 10 and 12. Each tray is movable sideways on rails 104 between loading and feeding positions. The members 70 each comprise a tab 78 pivoted to a body 74 carried on a lifting arm 72. When the tray is moved to feeding position with a further stack placed on top of the tabs 78, the arms 72 are raised in succession by a cam 128, whereupon the tabs are forced downwards to a vertical position and returned to the horizontal by springs 81 after clearing the top of the stack, then being lowered to engage the top of the new stack. When a sheet is to be separated, rollers 86 mounted on arms 88 and resting on the stack are rotated first counterclockwise to withdraw the top sheet from the tabs and buckle it against the members 60, then clockwise to feed the sheet to rollers 48, 49. From the lower tray sheets pass directly to register rollers 138, 139, the former being formed with a registering shoulder, while from the upper tray they pass through guides 194, rollers 140, 141 and further guides to the register rollers. The register rollers rotate after a pause for registration to pass the sheet to the station D. During delivery to the trays 52, 53 the separator rollers are raised out of the delivery path, and in the case of the tray 52, the guides 194 are lowered out of the delivery path. Printed sheets are stripped from the xerographic drum 11 by a finger 28 and passed to a stationary vacuum transport 29, and thence to finer rollers 34, 35, guides 39, rollers 40, 41, further guides, and rollers 43, 44. A movable sheet guide 45 is set to deliver the sheet to either the tray 51 (not shown), which is uppermost, or to the tray 52. The rotation of the rollers 86 is controlled by electromagnetic clutches on a shaft 89. The rollers 86 are raised by a camming arm 116 having an offset portion 117 engaging in slots 118 in the arms 88. The raising of the rollers and movement of the guides 194, 45 is controlled by a cam-actuated reciprocating arm 204 rendered operative by a solenoid SOL-1, the arm 204 also operating the joggers. A solenoid SOL-2 causes reciprocation of a slide member 290, whereupon stops 124 cause arms 122 to pivot and lift the arms 72 to raise the members 70 clear of the stack to be formed. Each side margin jogger 246, Figs. 7 and 8, is mounted on a flexible bar 263 which is moved inwardly and outwardly by the rising and falling of a truncated cone member 261 on a vertical rod 259 slidably supported in a housing 260 and reciprocated vertically by a ball 255 on a shaft 258 fixed to a link 256 rotatably secured in the crank arm 204.
