Abstract

1312157 Automatic circuit-breakers DORMAN SMITH SWITCHGEAR Ltd 22 Sept 1971 [22 Oct 1970] 50094/70 Heading H1N A circuit-breaker or isolator has, for the or each pole, a moving contact assembly 11 comprising a plurality of parallel-connected movable contact arms 27, each carrying a contact 28 engageable with a fixed contact 14, the arms being of strip metal and disposed side-by-side in parallel relation in a carrier 22, each arm having a spring 33 providing a loading portion engaging one longitudinal edge of the arm and a pair of links 36, 37, extending across the arm adjacent opposite sides thereof and locating on a cross member 32 extending transversly of the arms and provided by the carrier 22. Each arm 27 has a V-shaped notch 31 by which it locates on and makes electrical contact with an arcuate bearing surface 18 of a hinge contact block 15. A protrusion 42 of each arm 27 engages a lip 43 of the carrier 22 to limit movement of the arm under its spring loading. One arm 27a is longer than the other arm 27 and provides an arcing contact 29. Arm 27a has its own independent helical loading spring 30. A respective bimetal and electromagnet arrangement (not shown) associated with each contact assembly 11 cooperates with a common trip bar (not shown) to cause collapse of a toggle linkage 12 and tripping of the breaker. When the contact assembly 11 is used in an isolator for an electrical component, the construction provides two opposed carriers 22 on either side of a withdrawable conductor (not shown). The notch 31 and hinge contact block 15 arrangement is claimed in Specification 1,312,156. (For Figure see next page.)
