1311401 Plastics coated sized filaments DART INDUSTRIES INC 30 July 1971 [5 Aug 19701 36025/71 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions C3 and D1] Continuous sized filaments are further coated by passing through a molten blend comprising nylon, Sb oxide, and a non-plasticizing free-flowing organic material of m-p. >350‹C containing >50% combined Cl. Based on total weight of the product there are, by weight: 5-50% fibres, 1-10% Sb oxide, and 5-30% of the organic material. The chlorine-containing material may be compounds containing at least one chlorinated norbornene moiety (N) having 2 adjacent carbon atoms in common with another ring (R). (N) may contain # 6 Cl atoms. Ring (R) may contain 4-12 C atoms, and may be saturated or unsaturated and may be substituted with O, Cl, OH or -OSO 2 Cl. The material may have particle-size 2-5Ám and m.p. >350‹C. The Sb oxide may be Sb 2 O 3 , Sb 2 O 4 or Sb 2 O 5 . Also present may be 0.04-1% of stabilizer of the type used to stabilize PVC- e.g. Ba, Cd, Zn, or Pb compounds, epoxy compounds, organotin mercaptides, or carboxylates; Ba/Cd compounds, tetraphenyl tin, dialkyl tin dialkanoates, dialkyl tin maleates, dialkyl tin S, S<SP>1</SP>-bis-alkyl-mercaptoacetates, 0.5-5% polyethylene may also be included. Other conventional additives may be present. The fibres may be asbestos or glass and are sized with polyvinyl acetate or vinyl silane, to improve adhesion. After coating, the material is cooled to solidify the molten materials, and chopped into segments in which the fibres extend from one end of the segment to the other. The segments may have length 1/16 to 1¢ inches, and transverse dimension 1/16 to 1/4 inch. The product is flame-retardant.
