Abstract

1311298 Conveyers for furnaces SOC ANON HEURTEY 14 Aug 1970 [19 Aug 1969] 39221/70 Heading F4B A furnace, heated by downwardly radiated heat from its roof, is provided with a conveyer (not shown) preferably of the walking beam type which advances metallurgical products 5 along its hearth in cyclic steps, each step being made up of sequential movements of the products in alternating directions and of differing extents. In this way uniform heating of the undersurfaces of the products by absorbed heat re-radiated from previously uncovered hearth areas is attained. Thus for products having a length 6 to mutual spacing 4 ratio of 3 : 1, each product, e.g. 5a, Fig. 1, is moved one increment or one-third of its length forward to the Fig. 2 position to uncover hearth area 7c, and to cover up previously uncovered hearth area 7b by the leading third of its length which absorbs heat therefrom. It is then moved one increment back, so the back third of its length, see Fig. 3, once more covers hearth area 7c to absorb heat from it, and area 7d is uncovered. Finally to complete one cyclic step, it is moved two increments forward to the Fig. 4 position in which the middle third of its length absorbs heat from the now covered hearth area 7d, and a fresh area is uncovered downstream of it ready for the next cyclic step. The hearth includes an upper heat accumulating and conducting layer 2 of refractory brick or chromium containing cement, and an insulating backing layer 3.
