Abstract

1311068 Moulding surgical pads SCHOLL MFG CO Ltd 10 Aug 1970 [13 Oct 1969] 38392/70 Heading B5A [Also in Division A5] A surgical pad comprises a sheet of thermo plastics foam having an affliction-receiving cavity pressed inwardly from one face. The pad is formed in a double action press employing dies heated by high frequency alternating current. The upper die 1 comprises a conductive backing 6 and a knife edged skirt 7 for blanking the pad. An insulating block 10 provides a backing for the heated probe 12 that moves up through the lower die 2, collapsing the foam and creating the cavity in the pad. Preferably the pads are made of plasticized polyvinyl chloride or polyurethane although several other thermoplastics are suggested. An adhesive 23 may be applied to the lower surface of the foam sheet before the pressing operation. Normally this adhesive will be destroyed in the cavity by the hot probe, this is preferable if the pad is used to protect open wounds. A thermally stable adhesive may be used that will survive the pressing. In this case medicament may be secured in the cavity. The lower surface of the foam is covered by a sheet of material 24 having a release facing to protect the adhesive until the pad is used. In addition the upper surface of the foam may be laminated with a vinyl sheet 20 or a layer of pile fabric 22 for decorative purposes. The lower die 2 may be covered with a dielectric buffer such as tetrofluoroethylene to prevent the pad adhering to the die, or the buffer may be in the form of a travelling belt carrying the foam sheet.
