Abstract

1310696 Electroless plating SHOWA DENKO K K 15 June 1970 28887/70 Heading C7F [Also in Division C3] The surfaces of styrene polymer mouldings are treated prior to electroless plating by contacting them with firstly, an aqueous emulsion, containing an emulsifying agent, of a solvent selected from aromatic hydrocarbons, chlorinated hydrocarbons, cycloaliphatic hydrocarbons, ketones and esters, the emulsion containing 0À2 to 30% by weight of said solvent and the average size of the solvent globules being from 0À2 to 1 microns, and secondly, contacting the surface with a solution of sulphuric acid and dichromic acid. An optional third step comprises contact with hot sulphuric acid of concentration greater than 93%. The moulding may contain additives such as inorganic fillers and chlorinated polyolefins. Solvents specified are xylene, monochlorobenzene, methyl ethyl ketone, butyl acetate, toluene, ethyl benzene, dichlorobenzene, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, trichloroethane, tetrachloroethane, cyclo hexane, ethyl cyclopentane, acetone, methyl isobutyl ketone, diethyl malonate, diethyl phthalate, methyl salicylate and ethyl benzoate, the first four being used in the examples. The examples describe the treatment of polystyrene, poly (acryloditrile/ styrene), A.B.S. resin, and high impact polystyrene (styrene grafted on to polybutadiene rubber) followed by immersion in a chemical copper plating bath to effect electroless plating, and then by electrolytic plating.
