Abstract

1310682 Control of DC motors QUALITEX Ltd 7 Aug 1970 [14 July 1969] 35390/69 Addition to 1113065 Heading H2J [Also in Division D1] A circuit for causing a motor 19 to be stepped cyclically through a plurality of different speeds includes a ring counter 11 under the control of a pulse generator 10. The time interval between the pulses is controlled by a timing circuit comprising a unijunction transistor 7, adjustable resistors 8 and a capacitor 9. The ring counter 11 is operative to select according to its condition a respective one of several potentiometer circuits 12, 13, 14, 15 the sliders of which are coupled to the input of an amplifier 16. The amplifier 16 controls by means of a firing circuit 17 the firing angle of a thyristor 18 in series with the armature 19b of a shunt-wound direct current motor 19. A freewheeling diode 21 is connected across the armature. The stator 19a is fed with full-wave rectified but unsmoothed current from a rectifier bridge 20. The bases of the transistors 26 in the stages of the ring counter 11 are connected via switches 25 to a centre tap 2a on the secondary of transformer 2. Closure of the switches renders the individual stages of the counter 11 in-operative.
