Abstract

1310671 Beam axle suspensions DUNLOP HOLDINGS Ltd 24 Feb 1970 [27 Feb 1969] 10445/69 Heading B7D [Also in Division F2] A vehicle frame 2 is supported on a beam axle 2 by an A-frame (Fig. 2, not shown) and a shear/ compression sandwich spring. The spring comprises a stack of resilient blocks interleaved with and bonded to parallel metal plates which are progressively displaced in a direction perpendicular to the direction of stacking of the blocks, at least one of the blocks having a socket in at least one of its free faces, to reduce the stiffness of the block. Each rubber block has two sockets on opposite sides of the block with only a thin wall of rubber between the two. The axes (28, Fig. 6, not shown) of the sockets are perpendicular both to the direction of displacement and to the direction of stacking, and either intersect the longitudinal axis of the spring (as shown) or are progressively offset from it (Fig. 7, not shown). The sockets may be of cruciform shape (not shown). The plates and blocks may be V-shaped to give a chevron spring. The endconnection 17 of the spring is adjustably mounted on the frame 2.
