1310464 Two-stage vacuum coating process CARL-ZEISS-STIFTUNG [trading as JENAER GLASWERK SCHOTT & GEN] 8 June 1971 [13 June 1970] 19424/71 Heading C7F In a process for applying, by vacuum vapour deposition, an inorganic coating (A) having an E-modulus greater than 3 x 10<SP>5</SP> Kp/cm<SP>2</SP> to a substrate (B) of synthetic plastics or resinous material, there is deposited an intermediate layer (C) on substrate (B), (C) being a polymeric layer produced by means of a glow discharge in the vapour of a volatile organic substance or mixture of such. (B) may be polymethylmethacrylate or polycarbonate, and (A) is preferably a glass consisting of SiO 2 , B 2 O 3 , Al 2 O 3 and Na 2 O, but may be SiO 2 , CeO 2 , Sn oxide, In oxide, Pb oxide, sulphides, selenides and tellurides of Zn and Cd, fluorides of Mg, Li, Th, Pb, Ba, La or Ce, silicates and borates of alkaline earths or Fe, Cu, or Cr. Layer (C), preferably 30 to 400‹ thick, is made by glow discharging vapour of an aliphatic such as acetylene or an aromatic, e.g. xylene, or preferably, a Si-containing compound such as a volatile ester of silicic acid, e.g. a methyl or ethyl silicate, or volatile silicone oil. The volatile organic compound is put in 4, valve 5 closed, and the chamber pumped down via main pump 8, which is then replaced by auxiliary pump 10 whilst valve 5 is opened and a glow discharge established in the resulting organic vapour between substrate 11 and glass-backed Al plate 3, to produce the polymer inter-layer. Substrate 11 is then moved adjacent source 6 of coating material (A) which is evaporated by electron-beam heating.
