Abstract

1310126 Coating apparatus SHIPLEY CO Inc 8 May 1970 [8 May 1969] 22479/70 Heading B2L [Also in Division G2] A coating apparatus having means for controlling the capillarity, tension and position of the applicators comprises several wicks 21 of which three are shown mounted in a frame 22. Each wick has enlarged edges 21a and 21b for gripping, one enlarged end 21a of each wick fitting within a groove 24 in a mounting bar 25 and the other, 21b, being secured within grooves 27 provided in tension bars 28. The longer leg of each U-shaped mounting bar is connected to the frame 22 by an adjusting screw which allows the mounting bars to be levelled with respect to the substrate 1 being coated. The tension bars 28 are free to slide vertically and therefore permit the wicks 21 to be tensioned to control their thickness and therefore to control the pressure of the wicks against the substrate 1. The tension bars 28 are secured to the frames 22 by adjustment screws 29 which apply tension to the bars 28. The wicks 21, mounting bars 25 and tension bars 28 are stacked in a cavity 30 in the frame 22 between frame end pieces 31 and 32. A capillarity adjustment bar 33 bears against the stacked parts to squeeze the wick by means of adjustment screws 34 and 35 and frame end piece 32. The capillarity bar 33 exerts uniform force on each wick 21 since the mounting bars 25, tension bars 28 and vertical adjustment screws 29 are free to slide within the frame 22. The liquid to be applied by the wicks is fed in through hoses 39.
