1310106 Surface combustion heaters; matrix burner JOHN THURLEY Ltd 8 April 1970 [18 April 1969] 19838/69 Headings F4B and F4T Fluids are heated, whilst flowing through tubes, by surface combustors, formed from porous refractory material or foamed metal, and which constitute at least in part the wall of the chamber in which the heated tubes are located. A combustible gas/air mixture may be supplied through the pores from a backing plenum chamber including a metal screen flame arrestor. Drilled holes lead from the plenum chamber through the material to close to the combustion supporting surface, the flames from which may impinge on a ceramic tile. If the chamber wall is formed from superposed combustors, the upper combustors may admit combustion air alone into the chamber. The fluids heated may include water, oil, petroleum liquid chemicals or gases.
