Abstract
1309944 Anionic lactam polymerization POLYMER CORP 18 March 1970 [18 March 1969] 13089/70 Heading C3R In the anionic polymerization of a lactam in the presence of a basic catalyst and absence of a filler there is added prior to complete polymerization a lactam-soluble salt of a metal of Atomic Number 24 to 27. The addition of the salt results in a polymer having a lower crystallinity for the same molecular weight. The salts used are those of Mn<SP>++</SP>, Mn<SP>+++</SP>, Co<SP>++</SP>, Co<SP>+++</SP>, Cr<SP>+++</SP>, Fe<SP>++</SP> and Fe<SP>+++</SP>. They may be used in amounts of 0À05 to 10 mol. per cent and may be introduced into the reaction mixture prior to polymerization. Preferred salts are chlorides, fluorides, bromides and sulphates. In examples, 113 g. caprolactam is polymerized in the presence of 4 g. sodium caprolactam and 1À3 g. chromium chloride and 15À3 g. pyrrolidone in the presence of 0À032 g. sodium hydride and 0À88 g. cobaltous chloride.
