Abstract

Rectifiers.-In fractional distillation, the vapours from a still 1 are passed upwards through a series of elements consisting of concentric tubes 4, 5 through which a reflux obtained by condensation flows downwards. The arrangement is such that an exchange of heat takes place between the vapours surrounding the tubes 5 and the liquid within the tubes 5 while the vapours and liquids are flowing in the same direction. The reflux is obtained by passing the vapours through a series of separators 7 each consisting of cones, Fig. 2, in which the vapours expand, and which are provided with filtering-boxes 10 packed with inert material to separate the particles of liquid formed during the expansion The resulting liquids flow by pipes 11 to the zigzag pipe 6 by which the vapours are led from the elements 4, 5 to the separators 7. Certain impurities may be removed by means of a pipe 12 communicating with one of the pipes 11.
