Abstract
1309707 Tempering glass plates SARATOVSKY FILIAL NAUCHNO-ISSLEDOVATELSKOGO INSTITUTA STEKLA 28 June 1971 30093/71 Heading C1M Glass plates are tempered by assembling a pack 1 consisting of a plurality of substantially vertical adjacent glass plates on a set of guides 24, moving the pack 1 into a heating furnace 2, heating the plates to a tempering temperature, successively separating individual plates from the pack, and abruptly and separately cooling each glass plate in a cooling chamber 4. The pack is moved towards the furnace by means of a frame 7, having retainers 8 against which the last plate of the pack rests, the frame being driven by a threaded rod 6 acting on a nut 9 associated with the frame 7. The pack is replenished by making use of a replenishing rack 11 which includes a stand 21 connected to a nut 23 engaging the rod 6. In use the stand is operated manually to bring forward a fresh pack into contact with the preceding pack, the frame 7 disengaged and moved backward to grip the replenished pack and finally the stand 21 is disengaged so that there is no interruption in the forward movement of the pack. The furnace 2 includes a plurality of infra-red heat sources 3 emitting short-wave radiation.. As the plates are moved forward within the furnace the first plate of the pack passes from the guides 24 to a supporting member 12 which descends under the weight of the glass through a gap a between two grates 17 which differ in length where the glass is subjected to sudden cooling by air from nozzles 18 in the grates 17. The pressure of the air from the nozzles 18 in the longer grate 17 causes the plate to be deposited on a roll conveyer 19 where it is further cooled by air from a conduit 20. The grates 17 may be curved to receive curved tempered plates, or to produce curved tempered plates from flat plates (Fig. 3).
