1309675 16,17-Dihydroxy steroids and acetals and ketals thereof AMERICAN HOME PRODUCTS CORP 12 May 1970 [19 May 1969] 22756/70 Heading C2U Novel steroids of the general formula wherein X completes the A, B, C and D rings of a 13-polycarbonalkyl-4-en-3-one cyclopentanopolyhydrophenanthrene nucleus and A and B are each H, lower alkyl, monocarbocyclic aryl, monocarbocyclio aryl-lower alkyl, halolower alkyl, monocyclic heterocyclic or monocyclic heterocyclic-lower alkyl or A and B together are C 2-10 alkylene ("lower" referring to groups of 1-6 carbon atoms), provided that when X is of the formula at least one of A and B is halo-lower alkyl, monocyclic heterocyclic or monocyclic heterocyclic-lower alkyl, are prepared by reaction of' the corresponding 16α,17α-dihydroxy steroids with appropriate aldehydes or ketones. Novel starting materials of the formula wherein R is a polycarbon lower alkyl, R is H or CH 3 , -C 6 -C 7 - is a divalent radical of one of the structures where D<SP>1</SP> is Cl or Br, provided there is a #<SP>1</SP>- or #<SP>9(10)</SP>-double bond when R is C 2 H 5 , R<SP>1</SP> is H and the 6-position is unsubstituted, are prepared by oxidation of the corresponding 16-unsubstituted- 16-enes. Corresponding steroids excluded by the above provisos, e.g. 13-ethyl-16α,17α-dihydroxy-18,19- dinorpregn - 4 - ene - 3,20 - dione and its acetals and ketals, are prepared similarly. The steroids may be resolved d-steroids or racemic steroids. The progestationally active steroids of the first general formula above may be made up into pharmaceutical compositions with suitable carriers. British Specification 1,277,264 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,262,761.-
