Abstract
1309633 Brake discs DUNLOP HOLDINGS Ltd 4 March 1970 [5 March 1969] 11590/69 Heading F2E An annular brake disc particularly for use in aircraft braking systems which may be of beryllium, has formed therein a plurality of thermal relief slots 4, each of which extends from either the inner or outer periphery 5 or 2 of the disc across part of the radial width and terminates in an enlarged end opening 6, the edge of the opening having, when viewed in the axial direction with respect to the disc, a continuously curved profile of varying radius of curvature which is a maximum at a point opposite the intersection of the slot with the opening and decreases in a continuous manner from this point towards the slot The disc may have a friction lining attached to the disc by means of two slots 7 through which pass rivets, by or by means of a central rivet passing through a hole 8 and projections on the rear of the friction pad engaging holes 9. Alternatively a central rivet may pass through either of holes 10, 11 and two smaller rivets engage the friction pad backing plate and pass through holes 12, or 13 in the disc. The disc may be a rotor which has drive slots 3 engaging dogs on an aircraft wheel. The thermal relief slots may be arranged such that the radius of curvature of the centre portions of the edge of the end openings 6 opposite the intersections of the slots 4 with the openings is not less than 60% of the maximum circumferential width of the end opening, and the radius may continuously reduce from its maximum value at the centre to a value within the range from 10% to 25% of the maximum circumferential width X of the opening.
