Abstract

1309068 Spot-type disc brakes; dual- and split-circuit hydraulic brakes NISSAN MOTOR CO Ltd 19 April 1971 [7 Dec 1970] 26289/71 Headings F2E and F2F A spot-type motor-vehicle disc brake with two hydraulically-actuated pistons 11, 12 or 11a, 12a (one of which, 11a may also act as the cylinder of the assembly), the pistons defining between them a main fluid chamber 14 and an auxiliary fluid chamber 15, has two spaced seals 22, 23, where the walls of the pistons are in contact for isolating the main and auxiliary fluid chambers from each other, and a dram passage 24 leading from between the spaced seals to the outside of the brake for permitting pressurized fluid to be released when at least one of the seals fails. The decrease in fluid level in the master cylinder (not shown) provides a visual indication to the operator of a vehicle on which the brake is installed of the failure of the seal(s). In Fig. 2, piston 12 slides in stationary cylinder 11 which has secured to it at 26 a support structure 25; piston 12 acts directly on braking plate 18 which with attached pad 16 is loosely fitted in an opening 27, Fig. 3, in support structure 25; braking torque is transferred by structure 25 to cylinder 11. Friction pad assembly 17, 19, is retained by a member 20b integral with a yoke 20 moved in a direction parallel to the disc axis by piston 13; assembly 17, 19 is also loosely fitted in opening 27. In Fig. 4, cylinder 11a is closed at one end by wall 12a and is supported by two pins 30 each secured to it in two places and slidable in a rubber bushing 31 located in an arm 29 of a stationary support member 28. This movable cylinder is the equivalent of the cylinder 11 and separate piston 12 of Fig. 2. Fig. 1 (not shown) depicts the system. A master cylinder (1) has one outlet connected by line (6) to rear-wheel brakes (5, 5<SP>1</SP>) and by main line (4) to front-wheel brakes (3, 31); it has its other outlet connected by auxiliary line (4<SP>1</SP>) to the same front-wheel brakes.
