1308862 Grinding STOREN UND MASCHINENFABRIK EMIL SCHENKER AG 4 June 1971 19099/71 Heading B3D A helical-spray grinding machine comprises a platter 15 rotatable about a vertical shaft 10 and having vertical bearings 21 each arranged at an equal radial distance from the axis for receiving a spring, a pair of grinding wheels 6, 7 between which the springs are passed while the platter is rotating, a lever 20 pivotable about the shaft 10 and having at the said radial distance from the shaft a guide 25 shaped as a funnel for the springs, a latching member 23 for releasably connecting the lever to the platter when the guide is coaxial with one of the bearings, and a spring 28 for urging the lever when the latching member is released against a limit switch which actuates a control for engaging and releasing the latching member after a selected time. The grinding wheels 6, 7 having grinding surfaces 8, 9 and are mounted on vertical shafts 4, 5 driven from motors 2, 3. The vertical shaft 10 is belt driven from a variator 13 and motor 14 and carries two discs 16, 17 forming the platter 15. A plurality of apertures in the discs form the bearings for receiving and carrying the springs between the grinding wheels. The lever 20 is pivoted on the shaft 10 and carries the guide 25 which is funnel shaped at its upper end and feeds the springs axially into the bearings 21. A series of holes 22 is formed in the upper disc 17, the holes being sequentially engaged by the latching member 23 which consists of the rod of a piston in a pneumatic cylinder 24. The spring 28 extends between the frame 1 of the machine and the lever 20 and acts to urge the lever towards a limit switch 26. When the spring urges the lever against the limit switch, pneumatic pressure is supplied to cylinder 24 so that the member 23 engages the disc 16 and, as the disc rotates, enters one of the holes 22 to connect the lever to the platter with the guide 25 aligned with a bearing 21 whereby a spring drops from the guide into the bearing. The movement of the lever opens the limit switch and after a time delay air is discharged from the cylinder and a return spring lifts the member 23 from its hole 22 so that the spring 28 can again act to urge the lever 20 towards the limit switch to repeat the procedure for guiding a spring into the next bearing 21. The machine may accommodate springs of different length by vertical adjustment of at least the grinding wheel 6 and by varying the length of a distance piece 18 between the discs 16, 17.
