Abstract
1308728 Non-circular-sectional acrylic fibres AMERICAN CYANAMID CO 13 Oct 1971 [26 Nov 1970] 47722/71 Heading B5B Brilliant acrylic fibres having a non-circular cross-section are prepared from a solution of a polymer containing at least 85% by weight of acrylinitrile, at lest 5% by weight of an acrylamide derivative of formula where R 1 may be hydrogen or methyl, and R 2 and R 3 are individually selected from alkyl groups having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and the remainder if any may be another ethylenically unsaturated monomer. The solution is spun through a spinnerette into an aqueous coagulant, the resulting fibres washed with water, thermostretched for example, in hot water, dried and heat-treated. A treatment with acetone may be interpolated between the water washing and the thermostretching. Preferred acrylamide derivatives are N,N-diethyl acrylamide and N,N-dimethylacrylamide. The substituted amide is preferably present to an extent of 6% to 10% by weight. The optionally present ethylonically unsaturated monomer may be an acrylic ester, methacrylic ester, an unsaturated ketone, a vinyl ester, or vinyl ether, styrene or an alkyl derivative thereof, methacrylonitrile or a vinyl or vinylidene halide. The polymer solvent generally contains above 30%, preferably 40%, of inorganic compounds such thiocyanates, nitric acid, sulphuric acid, zinc or calcium chloride. In Example 1 a cocoon-shaped or heart. shaped fibre is exemplified.
