Abstract

1308645 Attaching handles to bags GORDON HAUGH PACKAGING Co Ltd, 4 May 1970 [5 May 1969] 21360/70 Heading A4G Handles 528 Fig. 15, of e.g. polyethylene are made by severing strips from a sheet of the material, folding the strips into a U-shape and then welding the strip to e. g. a polyethylene bag. A folded strip of polyethylene with inturned edges welded to the sheet Fig. 15, is fed at a constant rate from a roll 116, Fig. 2, through a device 126 with fixed rollers 130, 132, 136 and pivotal rollers 138, the strip is then opened into two sheets 112, 114 by members 122, 124, which sheets pass around a welding members 154, 156 and between welding members 158, 160, the sheets being fed intermittently by rollers 110 and the slack taken up by the pivoting of the rollers 138 during the time the sheets are stationary and the sheets are then seam welded and severed to form bags by a device 125. The handles are welded to the sheets during the period when they are stationary. In Fig.3 sheet material for handles from rolls 168, 170 is intermittently advanced by clamps 172, 174 and 176, clamps 178, 180 and 182 then close on the material to hold it while the clamps 172, 174 and 176 retract for the next feeding operation while the clamps 178, 180 and 182 are still closed clamps 184 and 186 clamp the material to the welding members 154, 156 and knives 188, 190 are pneumatically reciprocated, Fig.7 (not shown) to sever strips 147, 151 Fig.3, from the sheets, whilst the strips are still held by the clamps 184, 186 and welding members 154, 156 pneumatically operated clips 423, 438, 430 and 442, Fig. 8, are operated to grip the ends and sides of the strips, the clamps 184, 186 then retract leaving the strips clamped to the welding members by the clips 423, 438, 430 and 442, the welding members 154, 156 are then pivoted through 90‹ by racks 250, 252, Fig. 8, to fold the strips into the U- shape and to place the ends of the U between the welding members 158, 160 and the opened sheets of bag material 112, 114, Fig.3, the welding members 158, 160 then close to weld the handles to the insides of sheets 112, the welding members 158, 160 retract, the clips 423, 438, 430 and 442 release the handles, the welding members 154, 156 then pivot back to their original position and the sheets 112, 114 with handles are advanced by the rollers 110, Fig. 2, to the seam welding and severing device 125. The welding of the handles is performed by the devices 158, 160 Fig.12 (not shown) to provide two strip welds 532, Fig.15, and the devices 158, 160 are water cooled and spring loaded. A chain driven cam operated mechanism, Fig.13 (not shown) is provided for operating the various mechanism at a rate to produce bags at a speed of 0À5 seconds or less.
