Abstract

1308470 Removing contaminants from liquids NORTH AMERICAN ROCKWELL CORP 7 Aug 1970 [25 Aug 1969 (2)] 38249/70 Heading B2J The concentration of dispersed contaminant in a substantially non-conductive liquid is decreased by passing the liquid through a channel between opposed electrodes and enhancing the separation of the contaminant from the liquid in the channel through the action of an applied alternating or interrupted electric field by isolating at least one of the electrodes from the liquid using an insulating covering and placing a fuzzy substance 30 which is preferentially wetted by the contaminant rather than the liquid to be purified on only one of the electrodes. The invention is mainly concerned with the removal of water and/or aqueous solution of salts contaminant from hydrocarbon fuels although removal of contaminants from organic cleaning agents, solvents and oils is also referred to. Specific preferentially wetted or hydrophilic substances comprise woolviscose rayon felt, glass cloth or cotton with a rough or fuzzy surface texture. The electrodes may comprise stainless steel foil of substantially E shape and the insulating covering a sheet of polymethylmethacrylate. The insulated electrode may also be wrapped in a bag of vinyl plastic sheeting. The channel is provided with a low level outlet for draining the accumulated contaminant from the channel.
