1308203 Terephthalic acid SOC ITALIANA RESINE SpA 13 July 1970 [31 July 1969] 33957/70 Heading C2C A process for the preparation of terephthalic acid consists of partially oxidizing p-xylene with molecular oxygen in a first stage of reaction in an aliphatic carboxylic acid environment and in the presence of catalysts comprising cobalt and/or manganese bromides and completing the oxidation with molecular oxygen in a second stage of reaction, in the presence of a bromoaldehyde in such quantity that the bromine introduced is equal to between 0À1 and 10 gramatoms to each 100 mols. of p-xylene fed to the first stage.
