Abstract
1308087 Controlling flow from hoppers WHEELABRATOR CORP 1 Sept 1971 [3 Sept 1970] 40752/71 Heading B8S [Also in Divisions B3 and H1] A valve for controlling the flow of particulate material, a substantial portion of which is magnetic, such as a mixture of steel shot and sand, to a centrifugal wheel of a machine for cleaning metal surfaces comprises a passage 50 in which is mounted an assembly of a permanent magnet 46 and a coil 48 to control flow of the material through a space 64, 66 between the interior wall 62 of the passage and the assembly, the spacing between the wall and the assembly being non- uniform. The valve has inlet and outlet sections 16, 18 which are joined to a cylindrical section 17 defining the passage 50. The sections 16, 18 are connected by wings 30, 38 to conical cap members 32, 36. Polepieces 40, 42 are secured to the members and permanent magnets 46 are stacked between the pieces and surrounded by the coil 48 which has leads 60 passing through passages in the wings 30. The axis of the assembly is offset from the axis of the cylindrical section 17 so that the spacing therebetween varies from a minimum 66 to a maximum 64. Energization of the coil by a D.C. voltage offsets the effect of the permanent magnets to permit flow of the material through the passage 50. As the voltage is reduced, the magnets act on the magnetic particles to reduce the flow through the passage in proportion to the reduction in voltage. In another embodiment, the assembly (72, Fig. 6, not shown) is coaxial with the passage but has a non-circular cross-section or has the polepieces in an off-centre position.
