1307363 Tobacco smoke filters S DIKSTEIN 2 June 1970 [3 June 1969] 28037/69 Heading A2C A filter for a cigarette comprises an element capable of filtering out the greater part (preferably 80-90%) of the smoke produced on combustion of the cigarette and a carrier imbued with a volatile substance capable of producing a physiological and/or taste effect. The volatile substance may be nicotine, preferably in the form of its acetate, glycolate, lactate or pyruvate; a flavouring material such as almond, eucalyptus or lemon oils, or menthol; or mixtures of these substances. The filter element may be formed from a combination of cellulosic fibrous material and vegetable carbon, especially fibrous carbon produced from coconut fibres. The carrier may be the filter element per se or preferably comprises a separate plug of porous material which is advantageously attached to a cigarette as the outermost component. The porous material may be tissue paper, cotton wool or lignin. The three component filter shown attached to a cigarette 41 comprises a highly efficient active carbon filter 43, a filter 44 to hold the filter 43 in position, and a plug 45 of porous material treated with the volatile compound. Components 44, 45 are tipped with a sheath 46 impermeable to the volatile compound. The cigarette filler 42 may be tobacco or any other cellulosic or other suitable combustible material.
