1306868 Fatty polyethers ATLAS CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Inc 16 Sept 1970 [17 Sept 1969 (2)] 44204/70 Heading C2C [Also in Divisions C3 and C5] The invention comprises compounds of the formula [R-X-R 2 -O]y-R 3 (1) where R is alkyl, alkenyl, alkaryl or alkenaryl; y is 1, 2, 3 or 4; X is -S-, -O- or -CH 2 -; R 2 is - CH 2 H(CH 2 OH)- or -CH 2 CH( OH )CH 2 - the radical R-X-R 2 containing a saturated or unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon chain, of at least 8 carbon atoms, and R 3 is the radical which remains when y hydroxyl groups are removed from a polyhydric alcohol anhydride which contains at least one hydroxyl group and at least 4 carbon atoms or a polyalkyleneoxy derivative thereof, and compositions comprising at least 10% of a compound of the Formula (1) above and a compound of the formula where R 1 is the radical which remains when y hydroxyl groups are removed from a polyhydric alcohol containing at least 3 carbon atoms and 3 hydroxyl groups, the compositions not containing more than 10 wt. per cent of ethers derived from polyhydric alcohols of 3 carbon atoms, and their preparation by reacting a compound R-X-R 4 , where R 4 is an oxiranylmethyl radical with a polyhydric alcohol anhydride or an oxyalkylene derivative thereof and a polyhydric alcohol, the reaction being carried out in the presence of an epoxide addition catalyst, in such a manner as to provide 1-6 mols. epoxide per mol. polyhydric alcohol anhydride and polyhydric alcohol. The polyols from which R 3 is derived are preferably APolyols made by hydrogenolysing sugars and distilling the reduced product. The polyols are dehydrated under acid or basic conditions to give the polyol anhydrides. The epoxides R-X-R 4 may be made by reacting an alcohol or thiol R-XH with epiehlorohydrin, where X is -O- or -S-.
