Abstract

1306793 Coating apparatus BRITISH CERAMIC RESEARCH ASSOCIATION 12 Jan 1972 [5 Feb 1971] 4004/71 Heading B2L [Also in Division B3] Apparatus for subjecting material, such as a column of extruded ceramic material, to a blast of sand, grit or the like comprises a nozzle, through which the sand or the like issues, subjected to a composite movement derived from two reciprocating motions; which may be simple harmonic, at an angle to each other end of different frequencies. The nozzle 38 has inlets 34, 36 for sand and compressed air and is mounted on an arm 32 pivotably adjustably carried on a rod 48a connected by a universal joint 50 to a boss 46 adjustable on an arm 44, in turn, carried by a boss 42 adjustable on a fixed member 40. A bracket 30 on the lower end of the rod 48a is connected by universal joints 26, 28 to flexible links 18, 20 which pass through rigid guides 22, 24 and are secured to the rods 14, 16 of double-acting pneumatic cylinders 10, 16, the pistons of which are moved through different amplitudes at different frequencies. The blast from the nozzle may be directed onto a deflector or centrifugally acting disc. In other embodiments, the reciprocating motion is produced hydraulically, electrically or mechanically, and the apparatus may have more than one nozzle. The extruded ceramic material may be plastic clay cut to form bricks and the sand or the like may contain colour pigments.
