Abstract

1306557 Kinetic displays K NUTTALL 11 Aug 1971 [11 Aug 1970] 38529/70 Heading G5C An object, e.g. an artificial fish or bird, a model aircraft or submarine, immersed in a liquid in a container, is chosen to have the same density as the liquid and is moved irregularly by currents caused by jets of liquid pumped out of holes at the bottom of the container. In an embodiment in the form of an animated model aquarium, Fig. 1, a pump 15 delivers water from reservoir 16 to tank 11 through the irregularly spaced holes 14 of a pipe 12 lying in a meander on the base of the tank. The reservoir is replenished through pipe 18. The pump 15 may be peristaltic and operated irregularly. In another embodiment, Fig. 5, water drawn through filter 27 by impeller pump 26 driven by electric motor 28 is delivered back to the main part of the tank through the holes 25 in the false bottom 24. In a similar embodiment (Fig. 6, not shown) the false bottom 24 comprises a plastics slab in which holes 25 are connected to a meandering channel (30) formed in the underside which communicates with the outlet of the impeller 26. The impeller may be encased in the slab and artificial rocks and " scenery " may be provided. The artificial fish comprises a vacuum formed plastics body having a weighted lower region or a hollow upper region to keep it upright.
