Abstract

1306514 Selective printing MITE CORP 8 April 1970 [22 Aug 1969] 16745/70 Heading B6F A selective printer includes a movable type body 176 and a solenoid summation system to move the type body to a selected position. The solenoid system comprises a plurality of opposing pairs of solenoids 116, 118; 120, 122; 124, 126; each pair being connected together so as to provide simultaneous displacement of both solenoids in a pair when one or other is energized. The sum of the displacements is transmitted to the type body to selectively position it. In the particular embodiment a pulley system is used to axially displace the cylindrical type body, and a differential lever system (Fig. 11) is used to rotate the type body via pinion 194. The opposing pairs of solenoids enables each successive character to be selected without the summation system having to return 'to a datum position. Aligning for impression; hammer mechanism (Figs. 13, 18 and 19).-Alignment of impression is achieved with an electromagnetically operated pawl (256, Fig. 13) engaging a detent wheel 258 which is secured to splined rod 174. In addition, the hammer head (252, Fig. 18) is articulated to the hammer body and pivots about a point (336). An initial impression tilts the hammer head which is then retained in this tilted position by the light-friction exerted by a U-shaped spring (346). Letter spacing.-The type body and the hammer mechanism are stepped along the line by an electromagnetically operated ratchet and pawl mechanism (Fig. 4), carriage return being provided by a coil spring (208). The drive is transmitted via the belts of the pulley summation system to the type body carriage, and via a cable (192, Fig. 3) to the hammer carriage 184. As an alternative, the type and hammer carriages may be stationary and the record material stepped along the line. At the end of the "carriage return" a pin (215, Fig. 14) on the ratchet engages a lever (217) forming part of the pawl resetting mechanism. A pad (213) cushions the force occurring when the pin (215) hits the lever (217).
