Abstract

1306205 Electrophoretic casting of pottery GOUGH & CO (HANLEY) Ltd 19 July 1971 [3 March 1971] 5895/71 Heading B5A [Also in Division C7] A method of casting pottery hollow-ware using electrophoresis comprises pouring slip into a multiport mould made of porous material having a conductive out coating, allowing an initial casting-up, e.g. for 2-4 minutes, passing D.C. between an electrode immersed in the slip and the conductive coating, e.g. by applying a potential of 200-300 volts so as to cause electrophoretic deposition of solids upon the mould, allowing a final casting-up for longer than the duration of the passage of cement, draining surplus slip from the mould, partly drying the casting, disassembling the mould and removing the casting. The conductive coating may be a low melting point Sn/Bi/Zn alloy. The electrodes may be copper. In the apparatus, a table 2 has trollies 6 attached to an endless belt 4. Each trolley has two rows of moulds 7 and is unloaded at A, and loaded with empty moulds at B. At C and D the moulds are dried, filled with slip at E, casting up occurs at F and G. At H gantry 14 carrying electrodes 16 is lowered to moulds to produce electrophoresis. Casting up occurs at I-N and inversion of the moulds at O to drain surplus slip. At P-T the moulds remain inverted returning to upright at U. Drying occurs at U-V.
