Abstract

1305439 Cams W E GILSON 21 April 1970 [9 May 1969] 19088/70 Heading F2K [Also in Division H1] A rotary cam drum 12 of a programme controller comprises a plurality of coaxially arranged cam rings 20 each of which has a radially extending flange 20B from which material has been removed to form a recess 22, and an axially extending central boss 20A which serves to space apart the cam surfaces 22, 20B of adjacent cam rings, the cam rings 20 being removably secured together to allow a programme to be altered by replacing a ring or rings by substitutes. As shown, the cam rings have inwardly projecting arms 20C by which they are keyed to a drum 18 rotatably mounted on a shaft 32 which is releasably secured at one end only to a wall 28, release of the shaft and cam drum 12 being effected by unscrewing the shaft 32 by means of handle 56. The cams are retained on the drum between end plates 52, 54, 52 being releasable by bolts 50. The drum 18 carries a gear 48 driven via an idler gear 44 from the output gear of an electric motor. The cam rings 20 may be a friction fit on drum 18 and have angular divisions on the bosses 20A and radial flanges 20B to aid in removing material to form recesses 22. Each cam surface 20B, 22 cooperates with a cam follower actuating a push button switch. In Fig. 5 not shown, each cam ring has internal teeth which mesh with the elongated teeth of a gear shaft on which the rings are suspended, the cam followers bearing on the upper surfaces of the cam rings to retain them in position on the gear shaft. This arrangement ensures that even though the cam surfaces may differ in length somewhat the programme is not impaired.
