1305278 Quinoline, benzazepine and benzazocine derivatives E R SQUIBB & SONS Inc 12 March 1970 11970/70 Heading C2C Novel quinoline, benzazepine and benzaxocine derivatives of the general formula wherein each of X and X<SP>1</SP> is a hydroxy, C 1-8 alkyl, halo-C 1-8 alkyl, benzyloxy or C 1-8 alkoxy group or a halogen atom, R is a C 1-8 alkyl, C 2-8 alkenyl, C 2-8 alkynyl, aralkyl, X-substituted aralkyl or aralkenyl group, each of R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> is a hydrogen atom or R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> together form an oxygen atom, A is an alkylene group, each of p and q is 0, 1, 2 or 3, m is 1 or 2, n is 0 or 1 and NR<SP>3</SP>R<SP>4</SP> is a basic radical of less than 14 carbon atoms, in which each of R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> is a hydrogen atom or a C 1-8 alkyl, cycloalkyl alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, X-substituted phenyl, X-substituted thienyl, X-substituted furyl, X-substituted pyridyl, X-substituted aralkyl or X-substituted cinnamyl group or NR<SP>3</SP>R<SP>4</SP> is a saturated radical of the formula wherein X<SP>11</SP> is NR<SP>6</SP>, CHR<SP>6</SP>, O or S, t is 1, 2, or 3 and each of R<SP>5</SP> and R<SP>6</SP> is a hydrogen atom or a C 1-8 alkyl, hydroxy-C 1-8 alkyl, C 1-14 alkanoyloxy-C 1-8 alkyl, C 1-14 alkanoyloxy-C 1-8 alkoxy- C 1-8 alkyl, hydroxy-C 1-8 alkoxy-C 1-8 alkyl, di- (C 1-8 alkyl) amino-C 1-8 alkyl, di-(C 1-8 alkyl)- amino-C 1-8 alkoxy-C 1-8 alkyl, X-substituted aryl or X-substituted aryl-C 1-8 alkyl group, and acid addition and quaternary ammonium salts thereof are prepared by reaction of a lactam of the general formula with halogen-alkylene-NR<SP>3</SP>R<SP>4</SP> in the presence of a base and optional reduction of the resulting compound of the first general formula above, wherein R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> together form an oxygen atom to give the corresponding compound in which each of R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> is a hydrogen atom, followed optionally by salification of the product. Lactams of the second general formula above are prepared by alkylation, alkenylation or alkynylation of the corresponding compound in which R is a hydrogen atom in the presence of a base.
