1304538 Preparation of benzophenones IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 30 June 1971 [22 July 1970] 35515/70 Heading C2C Methylbenzophenones are prepared by heating a benzoyl chloride with at least one molar proportion of a methylbenzene at a temperature of at least 180‹ C. The Example I describes the preparation of 2,4:-dimethylbenophenone, which is oxidized to benzophennone-2,4-dicarboxylic acid in Example 2. The Example 3 describes the preparation of anthraquinone-2-carboxylic acid by the ring closure of benzophenone-2,4- dicarboxylic acid obtained in Example 2.
