Abstract

1304384 Laminates; conjugate filaments IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 10 June 1971 [11 June 1970] 28353/70 Headings B5B and B5N [Also in Division D1] One or two sheets of paper are laminated to the non-woven fabric described below using bitumen as adhesive. A non-woven fabric comprising 10 to 89% continuous polypropylene filaments and 11 to 90% polypropylene core-nylon 6/6À6 sheath bicomponent filaments is bonded by treating with saturated pressurized steam. A screw extruder supplies molten polypropylene to the central chamber 7 of a spinneret, from which it emerges as homofilaments via orifices 3 and as the core of bicomponent filaments through orifices 4. A second screw extruder supplies a mixture of molten polyhexamethylene adipamide (nylon 6À6), 65 to 95% by weight, and polyepsiloncaprolactam (nylon 6) to outer chamber 9, from which it is extruded as the sheath, the core/sheath ratio being 60/40. The polypropylene filaments and cores have a birefringence of at least 50% of the possible maximum. Each spinneret produces 40 mono and 42 bicomponent filaments of equal decitex. The filaments are quenched in air, brought into a yarn structure and drawn 2À71 to 3 fold between pairs of rotating rolls. Eight yarns are electrostatically charged and led through transversely reciprocating air jets on to a moving wire mesh belt to form a web. The web is bonded in a steam chamber and compressed by the chamber's inlet and outlet seal, and sprayed with a non-toxic polyethanoxy surfactant oil. In one embodiment the web is tufted with 3 tufts 1 cm along the length and 2À2 tufts 1 cm across the width using 2720 dtex nylon yarn. The fabric may be laminated with one or two layers of paper, using bitumen as adhesive. The bonds formed at bicomponent filament points by the plasticising action of steam have an average strength of 0À5 to 6 gms. Bond strengths are measured by laminating a fabric sample to a brass strip attached to a tension recorder and breaking individual bonds with the aid of tweezers and a microscope. The non-woven fabric has a tensile grab strength of at least 0À26 kg g<SP>-1</SP> m<SP>-2</SP> (the breaking tension of a 17À8 cm Î 20À3 cm sample divided by the density/unit area), measured as described.
