1304353 Hydraulic dampers OLEO INTERNATIONAL HOLDINGS Ltd 15 July 1970 [29 July 1969] 37999/69 Heading F2S A tube-within-a-tube type hydraulic damper has a plurality of baffles 34 of part-annular shape in the reservoir 18 to prevent surging of the liquid and consequent emulsification, especially when the damper is used horizontally. At least one passage 28 connecting the reservoir 18 with the working cylinder is provided on one side of a first diametral longitudinal plane AA of the damper. The baffles are required to be symmetrical about a second plane BB normal to the first, and the gaps between the ends of each of the baffles are on the same side of the plane AA as the passage(s) 28. When the damper is horizontal, the baffles divide the upper part of the reservoir into a longitudinal series of compartments opening at their lower sides into a common space extending the whole length of the reservoir. The baffles 34 consist of a semi-annular flexible member 35 extending across the reservoir and sandwiched between semi-annular plates 39 and annular plates 36. Holes 41 provide restricted communication between the tops of the compartments. On outward movement of the piston 14 liquid in the chamber 26 flows via port 27, annular passage 16, passage 30, and a flow-restricting means 29 to the chamber 23. At the same time liquid flows from the reservoir 18 through the passage(s) 28 into the chamber 23 and through a one-way valve 24 into the cylinder. On inward movement of the piston 14 liquid flows through a piston valve 25 into the chamber 26 and then through 27, 16, 30, 29 and 23, as above, and 28, to the reservoir 18.
