1303638 17α - Hydroxy - 5α - pregn - 9(11)- ene-3,20-dione GLAXO LABORATORIES Ltd 29 May [970 [30 May 1969] 27603/69 Heading C2U The novel title steroid is prepared by hydrogenating 3# - acetoxy - 5α - pregna - 9,16- dien - 20 - one to give 3# - acetoxy - 5α- pregn - 9 - en - 20 - one, reacting this or the corresponding 3#-ol in the form of an enolate thereof with molecular oxygen to give 3#- (hydroxy and/or acetoxy) - 17α - hydroperoxy - 5α - pregn - 9 - en - 20 - one, reducing to give 3#,17α - dihydroxy - 5α - pregn - 9- en-20-one, with hydrolysis of any 3-acetate when required, and oxidizing this: and is converted to 17α-hydroxy-pregna-1,4,9(11)-triene-3,20-dione by direct dehydrogenation or indirectly via the corresponding 2,4-dibromo compound.
