Abstract
1302745 Spot type disc brakes; pad assemblies; preventing squeal SOC ANON DBA 9 Dec 1970 [17 Dec 1969] 58368/70 Heading F2E A spot type disc brake includes a pad assembly 12 comprising a support plate 14 and a friction lining 18 carried by the plate 14: one or more radial grooves 20 are provided in the lining 18 and the radially inner and outer boundaries of the lining 18 are formed as bevelled surfaces 26, 24 which are inclined towards one another in the direction from the plate 14 to the surface 22 which forms part of an annulus coaxial with the disc and which comes into frictional co-operation with the disc. The radial dimensions of the lining thereby decrease from its face applied against the support plate 14 to its face 22 and such an arrangement is said to reduce high frequency acoustic vibrations on brake application. As seen in Fig. 2 the lining 18 is formed with a section in the form of an isosceles trapezium, the angles between the surfaces 24, 26 and the surface 22 being in the range 100 to 150 degrees but preferably 120 degrees. In the embodiment of Fig. 3 (not shown) the lining (18a) is formed with a section in the form of an asymmetric trapezoid: the surfaces (24a, 22a) have an angle therebetween in the range 100-120 degrees but preferably 120 degrees and the surfaces (26a, 22a) have an angle therebetween in the range 120-150 degrees but preferably 135 degrees. The construction of Figure 2 is most suitable for a brake where two motor cylinders act upon the pad and the construction of Fig. 3 is most suitable for single motor actuation. The lining 18 is attached to the plate 14 by gluing or over-moulding
