Abstract
1302051 Partial hydrolysis of steroid glycosides and some products thereof SHIONOGI & CO Ltd 19 March 1970 [19 March 1969] 13406/70 Heading C2U Steroids of the formula (wherein X is a furyl, butenolide or butanolide group; R 1 and R 2 are each H, OH or acyloxy; R m is H or acyl and is the same or different for each sugar unit; and n is an integer of 1 or more) are prepared by reacting steroids of the formula with a glycol cleaving agent followed by optional reduction and then hydrolysing the resulting steroids of the formula wherein Z is or an acetal or acylate thereof respectively. Alternatively some of the above products, which are novel and have the formula (wherein R and R<SP>1</SP> are each H or OH and at least one must be OH and n<SP>1</SP> is 1 or 2) and their novel esters, are prepared by reduction of other of the above products of the formula or esters thereof. The esters may also be prepared by acylation of the free ols. Other novel products are digitoxigenin-bis-digitoxoside 3<SP>1</SP>- acetate and 3<SP>11</SP>-acetate. The novel steroids have cardiotonic activity and may be made up into pharmaceutical compositions with suitable carriers.
