Abstract
1301634 Inflating tubeless tyres HOFMANN GmbH GEBB [trading as HOFMANN KG GEBR] 16 Sept 1971 [29 Dec 1970] 43284/71 Heading B7C Apparatus for inflating tubeless tyres comprises a support member 11 for supporting a wheel 3 with a tubeless tyre 13, a substantially bell-shaped inflation member 7 which can be lowered towards the support member so that the periphery 23 of an outer portion 18 of the inflation member can bear sealingly against the sidewall 13 of the tyre on the support member and the periphery of an inner portion 19 of the inflation member can bear sealingly against the wheel rim flange, in operation of the apparatus air being introduced into the tyre through a space 20 between the first and second portions of the inflation member and between the wheel rim flange and tyre bead, and means for centring and holding a wheel on the support member 11, the means consisting of a hollow clamping mandrel 1 movable freely upwardly into the wheel on the support member and movable centring and holding members 2 on the mandrel. The mandrel is preferably circular in crosssection and has three slots extending parallel to one another in the longitudinal direction of the mandrel and displaced relative to one another through 120 degrees in the peripheral direction, the slots containing the clamping and centring members 2 which are provided with a mechanism enabling them to be moved radially outwardly through the slots to grip the wheel. If the mandrel is to be used with wheels having a centre hole it may be provided with a frustoconical tip for insertion in the hole (as shown), or alternatively for wheels without a centre hole the mandrel may be made of smaller diameter than the inner diameter of the rim flange of the smallest wheel to be gripped, the members 2 then engaging against the wheel rim. The inner and outer portions 18, 19 of the inflation member are displaceable relative to one another on a shaft 10 to allow for the change in size of the tyre as it inflates, a sealing ring 21 being provided in the region where the inner portion 19 slides against the outer portion 18. The periphery of the inner portion 19 which bears against the wheel rim is provided with a sealing ring 8 of wear resistant plastics which may be of stepped cross-section as shown or of frustoconical cross-section.
