1301597 Alkan - 1 - al - 7 - ols BADISCH ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 21 Dec 1970 [24 Dec 1969] 60472/70 Heading C2C [Also in Division A5] Alkan-1-al-7-ols of formula where R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> are Me or Et, R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> are H or Me and R<SP>5</SP> is H or C 1-6 alkyl are prepared by reacting an alk-1-en-6-ol of formula with CO and H 2 O in the presence of a rhodium or iridium catalyst at 50-200‹C. and 100- 1500 atmos. The compounds 3,4,7-trimethyloctan - 1 - al - 7 - ol; 3,7 - dimethylnonan - 1- al - 7 - ol; 3,7,8 - trimethylnonan - 1 - al - 7 -ol and 3-methyloctan-1-al-7-ol are claimed per se and examples also prepare 3,7-dimethyloctan- 1-al-7-ol (hydroxycitronellal) by the above method. The products are odorants.
