Abstract

1300456 Arresting aircraft ALL AMERICAN INDUSTRIES Inc 12 Nov 1970 [16 March 1970] 53834/70 Heading B7G A pit mounted runway sheave assembly 10, Fig. 1, for aircraft arresting gear which includes a line 16, tapes 14 and energy absorbers 18, comprises a hinged truncated V-shaped cover 50 to which is secured parallel plates 54, 52, Fig. 4, between which is supported one or two rotatable sheaves 62 the plate 54 having depending from its end remote from the hinge 44, a knee element 64 so that the tape 14 is deflected downwardly in passing through the assembly 10, and locking means 76 are provided which hold the assembly 10 in a lowered position until an upwardly directed component of force 88 at the knee element 64, caused by tension on the tape 14 exceeds a predetermined value due to an aircraft landing, after which the assembly 10 is forced to a raised position, Fig. 5, and held there by a latch 70 to enable the tape 14 to freely pay out. The tape 14 is twisted through 180 degrees and is guided through, in the embodiment shown, two sheaves 62, by a plate 60 which has a central vertical slot. The lower plate 52 has a transverse plate 66 provided with web extensions (68), Fig. 7 (not shown), at each end, which each engage over a latch 70 when the assembly 10 is in its raised position. The locking means 76 comprises as shown on each side of the plate 50 a shear pin 80 held in a retainer 78 on a catch plate 72. A resilient pad 90 for each locking means 76, engages a web extension (68) of the plate 66 to cushion the shock when the assembly 10 reaches its raised position. In a second embodiment, Figs. 8, 9 (not shown), a single sheave (62A) is mounted at an angle to the plate 52 to guide the tape 14 which passes from a pit mounted shock absorber (18A) under a roller (100A) to an elevated net (16A). The net (16A) rests in a cross runway trough when not in use.
