Abstract
1300215 Tying or lacing coils in electromagnetic devices GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 24 March 1970 [2 April 1969] 14209/70 Heading B8C Apparatus, for tying cords 21, 22 about the ends 23, 24 of coils which project beyond a slotted magnetic core 27 having a central bore 28, comprises upper and lower coil end tying units 34, 33, Fig. 2B, a core holder assembly 31, a tying unit position-sensing and controlling unit 36, and an assembly 37 for indexing the holder assembly round in steps. The lower tying unit 33 comprises a member 51 which is connected by a member 59 for longitudinal swinging and turning motion by a crank-lever mechanism 57<SP>1</SP> selectively between a retracted position outside the core, and an extended position within the bore 28 of the coil 27 and for concurrent turning motion by crank-levers 113<SP>1</SP>. A cord 21 runs from a spool 63, past a tensioner 66, through a tubular leading end section 56 of the member 51 to a conventional cord cutting-clamping assembly 67. A cooperating component of the unit 33 comprises a hook member 71 which is supported in frame 32 for combined rectilinear and rotational movement by swinging arm mechanism 102 and rack-and-pinion mechanism 111. The upper tying unit 34 consists of a mirror image of the lower unit 33, and is carried by a platform 80 which is vertically adjustable by a piston and cylinder unit 143, 144 and which also carries the sensing and controlling unit 36. A motion controlling cam system comprises a control shaft 82 having four complementary cam pairs 86-89 which control, through respective linkages, simultaneous motions to the units 33, 34, the shaft 82 being drivingly connected to a motor 123 through a clutch-brake assembly 124. To operate the tying apparatus the motor (123) and a pump (202) are switched on by switching electrical circuits Figs. 10A, 10B, 10C, not shown, and a foot pedal (216) is pressed to instigate the lowering of the platform 80 and all of the components such as the unit 34 and assembly 67 carried thereby until a shoe 132 on the end of an element 131 of the sensing unit 36 makes contact with the upper face 26 of the stator 27 whereupon the downward movement is terminated. Power is also applied to the motor 123 to rotate the shaft 82, and produce the tying movements of the upper and lower members 51, 51<SP>1</SP> and 71<SP>1</SP>, 71<SP>1</SP> according to the stitching pattern as shown in Fig. 20A<SP>1</SP> associated with Figs. 20A, 20B, not shown. The shoe 32 of the element 131 senses irregularities of the upper core face 26 to raise, orlower, the platform 80 accordingly, the apparatus stopping indexing upon the completion of a 360 degrees stitching cycle. The indexing assembly comprises a crank arm 177 which is reciprocated by chain and gear mechanism 194, 188 and which is adjustably connected to an arm 176 which carries a pair of disc brake callipers 173, 174, a third set of disc callipers 172 being secured to the frame 32. All of the brakes 172, 174 cooperate with a disc 171 on a shaft 47 of the holder assembly. The brakes 173, 174 only are actuated during a forward indexing movement of the lever 176, only the brake 172 clamping the disc during the return stroke of the lever. The length of the indexing stroke is controlled by a cylinder 182 which selects the position of a connecting rod 183 in a corresponding slot 184 in the arm 176.
