Abstract

1299963 Synthetic vascular graft MEADOX MEDICALS Inc 11 Feb 1970 [10 Oct 1969] 6585/70 Heading A5R [Also in Division D1] A synthetic vascular graft comprises an elongated tube of warp-knitted fine denier polyester fibre having stitches providing porosity sufficient for optimum tissue ingrowth characteristics while maintaining sufficient control of porosity to prevent haemorrhage when the graft is implanted. The graft, which may be. bifurcated as in Fig. 2, is preferably made from 56 gauge fibre on a double needle bar Raschel machine and has tricot stitches or lock stitches, so it will not ravel or fray when sutured. Crimping to give convolutions enhances the ability of the graft to extend or contract. When first fabricated, the exterior of the graft is rib-knitted whilst the interior is relatively smooth. Consequently the structure is turned inside-out so that the interior surface comprises longitudinally extending ribs. This tends to shrink the fabric, equallise stresses and aid the flow of blood through the graft.
