Abstract

129,992. Ryan, H. D. March 28, 1918, [Convention date]. Mineral oils, extracting; paraffin wax, extracting.-In extracting bitumen, paraffin wax, and other constituents from shale &c., the latter is digested with heavy oil at a temperature too low to effect destructive distillation, and the hot digest or solution is separated from solid residual matter and discharged into a bath of light oil, in order to prevent the deposition of bitumen on cooling. The shale is fed by a screw conveyer 3 to a retort 2 containing a cylindrical screen 5 rotating in a bath of heavy oil 14 at a temperature of about 600‹ F. ; volatile constituents escape to a condensing coil 50, and refractory solid matter is discharged from an outlet 11. The solution flows through a pipe 16 into a conical tank 17 containing gasolene. Volatilized light oil escapes to a condenser 32 and is returned to the tank through a pipe 21, and the solution meeting an upward current of light oil is carried into tanks 36, 37, 38; these tanks contain heating coils 39, and light oil is again driven off to the condenser 32. Part of the digest is returned to the retort through a pipe 46 and the remainder is withdrawn through pipes 42 for further treatment. Clay &c. is discharged from the tank 17 and conveyed through a heated chamber 25 for the recovery of light oil.
