Abstract

1299627 Measuring noise SIEMENS A G 28 Sept 1970 [29 Sept 1969] 46007/70 Heading G1U Noise in a communication channel 4, Fig. 1 e.g. a frequency or time division multiplex channel, is measured by injecting a noise signal of known amplitude and lying in the band 350 to 550 c/s into the channel, this signal being derived from a signal generator 1 by filtering 2, amplifying 3 and measuring 10, and the output signal produced by the channel 4 is processed in two ways, firstly the energy lying in the band 700 to 3, 000 c/s is measured, with switches 52, 52<SP>1</SP> in their positions shown, and secondly, with switches 52, 52<SP>1</SP> in their upper positions, the energy lying in the band 0 to 3, 000 c/s is measured and an attennator 9 is adjusted until the meter reading is the same as that for the band 700 to 3, 000 c/s. The setting of the attennator 9 is then a measure of the noise produced by the channel. The signal generator 1 comprises a shift register 11, 12, .... 20, Fig. 2, having feedback to the first stage from stages 13 and 20 via an exclusive or circuit 25, stepped by clock pulses 21. Such an arrangement produces, in known manner, a pseudorandom train of pulses, which, by a suitable choice of clock frequency and number of stages in the register, (e.g. 10 kc/s and ten stages) can be made rich in low frequency components.
