Abstract

1299624 Flame retarded polymer blend articles KOHJIN KK 1 July 1970 [29 Jan 1970 3 Feb 1970] 31812/70 Heading C3P Articles such as fibres and films comprise as their principle constituents, a halogen-containing high molecular weight polymer, and a partially acetalized polyvinyl alcohol in a weight ratio of from 2 : 8 to 8 : 2, and from 0À1% to 15% by wt. (based on the total amount of the said principle constituents), of tin substantially in the form of stannic acid. The halogen-containing high molecular weight polymer may be for example, P.V.C., polyvinylidene chloride, polychloroprene, a chlorinated-polypropylene, -polyethylene or -polyvinylchloride, or a graft polymer of vinyl chloride on polyvinylalcohol. This polymer preferably contains at least 20% by wt. of halogen. The polyvinyl alcohol may preferably have a degree of acetalization of up to 60% molar. The article may be made by partially acetalizing a polymer blend article whose principal constituents are a halogencontaining high molecular weight polymer and polyvinyl alcohol, in an acetalization bath containing an aldehyde, an anti-swelling agent a strong inorganic acid, and a tin salt of a strong inorganic acid, and washing the resulting article with water to convert the tin salt to substantially stannic acid. Aldehydes which may be used are, for example, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, benzaldehyde, furfural or glyoxal. Strong inorganic acids are H 2 SO 4 and HCl; anti-swelling agents are Na 2 SO 4 or (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 , and the preferred tin salt is stannic chloride. In the examples, formaldehyde is used, and the halogen-containing polymer is P.V.C. with or without polyvinylidene chloride. The article to be acetalized is usually made by polymerizing for example vinyl chloride in aqueous emulsion in the presence of P.V.A., and forming the article (e.g. spinning fibres), from the resulting emulsion.
