Abstract

Polyvinyl acetals are prepared by condensing one or more vinyl ester polymers and/or mixed polymerization products of vinyl esters in aqueous emulsion with carbonyl compounds in the presence of strong acid in such concentration that a solution is produced. The acetal may be isolated by addition of water. Specified materials are: polymers, polyvinyl acetate, formate, chloracetate, propionate, and butyrate, and interpolymers of vinyl esters with maleic anhydride, maleic esters, viny chloride, styrene, methyl vinyl ketone; carbonyl compounds, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde, butyraldehyde, ethyl hexanal, aldol, crotonaldehyde, glyoxal, paraformaldehyde, paraldehyde; acetone, diethylketone, acetophenone, cyclohexanone; and mixtures of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde, formaldehyde and butyraldehyde, acetaldehyde and butyraldehyde, formaldehyde and acetone; acids, sulphuric, hydrochloric, phosphoric, and toluene-sulphonic acids or mixtures thereof. There may also be present a complex-forming salt of the first or second group of the Periodic System, e.g. lithium bromide, zinc chloride. The product may be used for spraying, for films, celluloid substitutes, interlayers for safety glass, and for electrotechnical purposes. In examples: an aqeous emulsion of polyvinyl acetate is gradually introduced into a solution of paraformaldehyde or cyclohexanone in concentrated hydrochloric acid, or into a solution of formaldehyde or paraldehyde in strong sulphuric acid, and the product precipitated by water; or an aqueous emulsion of polyvinyl acetate is gradually introduced into a solution of paraformaldehyde in strong sulphuric acid and followed by cyclohexanone, and the product precipitated by water. Solvents specified for the products are methylene chloride, alcohol, ethyl acetate, benzene, and mixtures thereof; ethylene chloride; mixtures of methylene or ethylene chloride with chloroform and carbon tetrachloride. Specification 466,173 is referred to. The Provisional Specification includes examples in which an emulsion of polyvinyl acetate is gradually stirred into a solution of paraformaldehyde in strong sulphuric acid or into solutions of formaldehyde (with or without paraformaldehyde), acetaldehyde, or acetone, in concentrated hydrochloric acid and in which an emulsion of a mixed polymer of vinyl acetate and vinyl chloride is gradually stirred into a solution of paraformaldehyde in concentrated hydrochloric acid.
