Abstract

1299601 Automatic current control PLESSEY CO Ltd 28 Sept 1970 [24 Oct 1969] 52190/69 Heading G3R The R.M.S. current supplied to output terminals 2 from an A. C. source 1 via a transformer T1 is maintained constant by varying the firing instant of anti-parallel connected thyristors R1, R2 in accordance with an error signal derived from a comparison of the actual current with a reference signal VR representative of a desired current. The actual current is sensed by a current transformer T2 whose output is rectified by a rectifier 3 feeding a selector 4 which passes a desired proportion of the signal to a R.M.S. detector 5. The output of the latter is substantially proportional to the R.M.S. current taken by the load connected to output terminals 2 and is supplied to a differential amplifier 6 for comparison with the reference signal VR. The output of amplifier 6 is applied to a timing circuit 7 which controls a pulse generator 8 to determine the firing instant of the thyristors R1, R2. The output terminals 2 may supply the lamps on an airfield lighting circuit and the regulator maintains the R.M.S. current constant at a value corresponding to a brilliance selected by the member 4, which comprises a number of shunt paths connected across the output of rectifier 3, each path consisting of a silicon controlled rectifier and a resistor. Selected paths are chosen by triggering the appropriate silicon controlled rectifier using switches in the regulator or in a remote control station. Detector 5 may consist of a number of series-connected Zener diodes inter-connected with a resistive network.
