Abstract
1400762 Automatic current control SIEMENS A G 7 July 1972 [7 July 1971] 31909/72 Heading G3R [Also in Division H3] The heating current to a semi-conductor rod is regulated by varying the fixing angle of an electronic switch, between the rod and a current source, according to the difference between a reference signal and a D.C. signal produced from the measured heating current via a rectifier and smoothing circuit. The current is thus regulated despite variations in the resistance of the rod as it is manufactured. As shown, switch 3 e.g. a thyratron, switching transistor, thyristor or triac controls the current from a single phase (or three phase) supply 2 to rod 1, the current being sensed by current transformer 4, rectified by bridge 5 and applied to lowpass network 7. The output of this network, a signal G proportional to the heating current r.m.s. or average value, is compared with a reference G o by differential D.C. amplifier 10, to control the firing angle of switch 3, using a pulse generator 11 (see Division H3). The transformer 4 may be replaced by a shunt and rectifier bridge 5 replaced by a half-wave rectifier.
