Abstract

1299520 Tetrafluoroethylene polymer dispersions E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 1 April 1970 [1 April 1969] 15529/70 Heading C3P A dispersion in water of a tetrafluoroethylene polymer containing at least 98% by weight of units derived from tetrafluoroethylene is prepared by heating gaseous tetrafluoroethylene or a mixture of tetrafluoroethylene and a monomer copolymerizable therewith under a pressure of 50 to 700 p.s.i.g. at a temperature of 50‹ to 125‹ C. in the presence of water and an initiator for the polymerization of tetrafluoroethylene, until the resulting dispersion of polymer in water contains 20 to 50% by weight of solids, there being added to the polymer dispersion, before its solids content reaches 4% by weight, (a) 0À00002 to 0À002% by weight, based on the weight of water in the dispersion, of a hydrocarbon-based nucleating agent, which has the formula R-(C 6 H 4 ) k (OCH 2 CH 2 ) x OH (where R is a primary, secondary or tertiary alkyl group containing 1 to 20 carbon atoms, -C 6 H 4 - is a phenylene group, k is 0 or 1, and x is an integer from 4 to 50) and a 1% by weight solution of which in water, or a saturated solution of which in water if its solubility is less than 1% by weight, has a surface tension at 23‹ C. at least 30 dynes/cm. less than water at 23‹ C., and (b) 0À001 to 0À2% by weight, based on the weight of water in the dispersion, if a fluorocarbon-based nucleating agent which has the formula (where Y- is H-, Cl- or F-; R f is where n is an integer of from 5 to 10; Z is and M is an alkali metal ion, ammonium ion or an ammonium ion substituted by alkyl or 1 to 4 carbon atoms) or of the formula (where R<SP>1</SP> f is a perfluoroalkyl group containing 1 to 5 carbon atoms; -R<SP>11</SP> f is -F or -CF 3 ; m is 0 or an integer from 1 to 10; and M and Z are as defined above) and a 1% by weight solution of which in water, or a saturated solution of which in water if its solubility is less than 1% by weight, has a surface tension at 23‹ C. at least 20 dynes/em. less than water at 23‹ C., and there being added to the dispersion (c) 0À4 to 2À5% by weight, based on the weight of water in the dispersion, of chlorendic acid, the addition of chlorendic acid commencing when the solids content of the dispersion is between 4% and 10% by weight. In the examples tetrafluoroethylene and hexafluoropropylene are polymerized in the presence of water, paraffin wax, ammonium perfluorocaprylate, disuccinic acid peroxide, a surfactant of formula (x =9-10), chlorendic acid, ammonium #- hydrohexadecafluorononanoate, a surfactant of formula (x = 10, y = 12 and z = 5), (x = 7), C 8 H 17 SO 3 K and reduced iron powder.
