Abstract

A substantially saturated solid thermoplastic polymer of perfluorodimethylene-bis(perfluorovinyl ether) containing repeating units of the formula <FORM:1106344/C3/1> <FORM:1106344/C3/2> The polymer may be a homopolymer or a copolymer with one or more of: a perfluoro-olefin of the formula CF2 = CFX where X is fluorine or the perfluoromethyl group, a perfluorovinyl ether of the formula Rf-O-CF = CF2, where Rf is a perfluoroalkyl radical containing from one to twelve carbon atoms or a perfluorovinyl ether of the formula CF2X-CF2-O(CFX-CF2-O)m-CF = CF2 where m is an integer of 1 to 4. The polymers may be prepared by carrying out the homopolymerization or copolymerization with the perfluorodimethylene - bis(perfluorovinyl ether) in a concentration of no more than 12% by weight, based on the total weight of monomer(s) and diluent, in the presence of an inert liquid medium. In the Examples perfluorodimethylene - bis(perfluorovinyl ether) is (1) homopolymerized in the presence of perfluorodimethylcylobutane as inert liquid medium and N2F2 as catalyst, is (2) copolymerized with tetrafluoroethylene and (3) is copolymerized with perfluoromethyl perfluorovinyl ether.
